General Meeting Minutes – February 2, 2007

Meeting called to order: 8:05P by Commodore Tom Corbett. Tom thanked the Roberts and the Smiths for a delicious Cowboys & Cowgirls Valentine’s meal. All enjoyed and appreciated. Yee Haw, can’t you just “feel the love”!  Good Job!

Guests: No guests.

Minutes:  Alona moved minutes be approved & accepted as published in the

January Newsletter. Nancy seconded. Approved.

Treasurer Report: (Tom for Charlie) All is well. Charlie and Levi meeting on the 2007 Budget.

RCO Report: Levi stated that the top oven does work. Instructions were given:

Press Bake, Temp and Bake again. That’s it! Be sure foil doesn’t block heating element.

Club Rentals – No rentals for February.

Cruise-ins – None for February however Corinthian will visit in March.

We’re looking to develop a “Formal Greeting Committee”, a group of volunteers who will report to the RCO.

Building & Grounds: Annual work-party is scheduled for Saturday 3/31. Lunch will be provided.  A list of chores was passed around. Levi requested sign-ups.  Major projects are the Parking Lot and Roof.

VCO Report:  Don offered a $2,000 check to be transferred from the Bar to the General Fund. He thanked everyone for their patronage. We now have a safe located under the glass counter near the wine corker. It is here we will store our cash monies. The safe opens with a five-digit code. The code must be entered quickly or it may not open. Try again if necessary. When you hear a click, turn the key to the right, open.  The code will be given to the Director of the month who in turn will inform the bartenders for that month. In case of emergency, Don is your RCO and back up for all bar needs.  Hess Chard is popular but the cost is going up 20%-25%. We have enough to last through April. Kenwood Chard has gained popularity (ordered two to one over Hess) and the prices have not gone up. If we continue to stock Hess, it will be a premium wine at the cost of $4 a glass. Kenwood would remain at $3 a glass. If you’d like a house wine at $3 and a premium wine or $4 or more, please let Don know. If he receives a large enough response, he’ll look into it.  Tom said we need to think of creative ways to cover expenses and make money for the club. Shirley suggested if we want to sell premium wines, we could sell them by the bottle, champagnes as well. Be sure to pump all wines and place in refrigerator (even reds) on Saturday nights so wines will remain fresh throughout the week. We don’t want to have unnecessary waste. Gloria has cleaned all the pourers for the liquor bottles. A legal amount is 1 ½ oz (aka shot, jigger, bar glass). Don and his team are checking that all pourers are working properly. We need to pick a date for the March Bartending Class. We invite everyone to attend. We will brush up on ABC rules to be sure we are in compliance.

CO Report: Tom stated the board had an informal meeting (retreat) to explore and brainstorm several ideas including the climate of the club, its direction for the future and generally how to accommodate increased costs and expenses going forward. Our bar costs, our utilities and clubhouse maintenance are increasing and we need to look at all of our sources of income for remedies. Also, our club has the same problem with increasing expenses that any home budget has…as the facility ages, the maintenance costs go up. Plus, we have some major projects such as the roof and parking lot that must be budgeted. The business items will all continue to be addressed in our upcoming board meetings and results will be shared with the general membership. Regarding climate: our PYC mission remains as our charter members intended…safe boating, fellowship/friendship and fun. Tom would add that trust and respect for all members is an important ingredient to our success. We all volunteer our time and efforts and even though we’re not perfect, our intentions are always to do what is good for the club. This should be kept in perspective as we conduct our business and our meetings. In other words, as we communicate with each other…it should always be in a friendly and respectful manner. Passion is good; it drives success, but channel it in positive ways. Rich Todt asked if we are addressing the issue of raising the membership fees and proprietary versus non-proprietary membership. Tom assured Rich that the board is addressing those issues with our “By Law Review Committee” and in other ways. One idea that came out of the board retreat was to improve communication and be more timely with responses…e.g. respond promptly when a member brings up an issue for the board. To this end, Tom wrote letters to Rich and Harold in response to issues they raised.

Events: Diana invited everyone to the Super Bowl Potluck. Feel free to drop in. If you’re not interested in watching the game, perhaps you’d like to help out making

our famous “Cluckers”.  St. Patrick’s Day is coming up soon. See Keith for details. Rich reminded everyone that reservations are necessary. A $20 check before

March 9 will confirm your reservation.

Cruise-Outs: McKenzie stated we are set for 3/10 St. Francis YC – cruise/drive. Please sign-up for an “off the menu” dinner. By boat, arrive around 12:30-1P.

Don’t be late or there may not be a spot for you. If you drive, please carpool. Men are required to wear coats and women, a dress or pant ensemble. Tom inquired about cruising in Friday night; Mac stated you are on your own. A cruise to Corinthian is in the works.

Membership: Gloria stated she has four applications out there. Some would like to come as guests before they start the membership process. Please help welcome these perspective new members when they do come and pay us a visit.

Sunshine: (Linda for Lonnie) – all is well. Tom mentioned that Marshall has just had a stint implant and is looking great! Marshall will be attending the PICYA meeting Monday 2/5 and will report back to the membership.

Galley: Suzanne stated - all is well. There is a white board posted on the fridge. Please use that to communicate your needs. We have a new paper towel holder. Tom G. noted that we have a new chafing dish. Now we have two! Mac stated we need a big fork & tongs (bigger than those whimpy things we have).

Editor: Alta thanked folks for their input and reminded everyone if they would like to be the feature story, please sign-up on the board and submit a story about you and your boat for the front page of the newsletter.

Advertising: (Tom for Jim) – The new advertisements are really looking spiffy!

The Coop: Alona stated she received only a few entries for the T-Shirt Design Contest. She has extended the deadline a few more days in hopes of receiving more. Please submit your entry by email to Alona or Dee. Regarding the Emblems and Pins…We will print a description in the next newsletter. New Items: Fleece Turtlenecks are on sale. Additionally, we now supply wine charms (identifiers) for $15 a set. In the spirit of Valentine’s, we have three “Mystery Bags” for $5 each.

All 3 sold.

Photography: Gail pointed out we now have “Team 2007” pictures on the wall.

PICYA: Marshall will bring a shortened version of the letter written for Latitude 38 and Bay & Delta Magazine to the PICYA Meeting 2/5/07. A draft will be posted on the bulletin board for review. Tom will also include in our next Newsletter.

Décor:  No report. Gloria, Francesca and Claudia provided tonight’s flowers.

Unfinished Business: Tom informed Vince M. & Kevin H. about the new Latitude 38 article (page 64 ) and the docks here at PYC. The City is still looking at bids for the gates. All improvements have been funded.

WiFi: Of the 20 responses we received, all but two were in

favor of offering WiFi to our members and guests. Tom asked for a volunteer to chair the committee; Jack Ermey offered his leadership and George Fricke will support.

New Business: NoneWe have received some responses. Please send in your questionnaire to Linda via email/U.S. mail or call and leave a message. Rich Todt suggested that the questionnaire should have asked if you wanted the club to make money from the WiFi offering. In addition, he suggested that each member have an individual account. Please include any additional comments you would like to share as well.

Good of the Club: Update on the Dock: Tom reported that the City’s Kevin Hornick has received all bids on pedestals (power, water, lights) and gates and is waiting for one more bid by Friday 2/9. We may be getting new restrooms as well. The docks and the ramps will be repaired/resurfaced. All work to be completed by mid to late April. The gates will be installed first. Two weeks from today (2/2) a selection will be made. Al will check with the City regarding the installations of the bathrooms before they are installed. We need to keep our eye on the ball as to where the bathrooms will be allocated. Tom stated that the City is listening to us.  Ginny informed us that we have number of 2006 PICYA Books; take an extra one for your car. 4/28 is the Butter & Eggs Parade. Tom is in charge of the Cow Chip Toss…any volunteers? Everyone seemed excited to participate in the parade once again. Maybe we could use the “Cluckers” we’ll be making. Suzanne offered to organize PYC’s participation. She’ll need to get our application in by 3/2 to get the friendly price (next cutoff is 3/16). Suzanne will bring her findings to the board 2/15. 4/21 Opening Day on the River

is our event. Tom suggested we work with John Fitzgerald (River Festival organizer)

as he has plans for some boat racing that day and possibly the Alma arrival.

St. Francis YC has world-renowned speakers for their Wednesday lunches. See http://www.stfyc.com/files/Jan07.pdf for details. Alta read an article about the Coopers’ grandson. Claudia has improved the Events Board and invited folks to bring in photos of their little loved ones. The Guess Who photo will be announced next month. Any guesses? Gloria thanked everyone for coming and thanked her team for their efforts with food and decorations. Ellie stated the U.S. Power Squadron offers inspections of your boat for safety, etc. She will put a notice in the upcoming newsletter.

Linda circulated a sign-up sheet for the Vallejo Crab Feed 1/27.

James had something very special to share with Cathy L…Peace Time Pasta!!

Tom G. invited everyone to enjoy a video of our Delta Cruise ’06 and NYE Party. Hoop mentioned he’d like to have a Dingy Dine-Around again this year. It is a fantastic event. Hopefully the Sea Scouts will taxi a few of us without dinghies!

Don reminded everyone to be sure to turn off the faucets in the restrooms to avoid waste and expense in having all that heated water go down the drain.

5050/50 Dee collected $130 smakeroos! Good Job Dee! And whose the lucky winner walking home with $65?…Keith! I’m telling you, this is one lucky couple Ellie collected $95; $47 won by Levi and $48 for the good of the club!
