Well,
I chaired my last PYC board meeting the other night and it felt pretty good.
I've had a good time working with a lively, strong minded and intelligent group
of directors and officers to reach our stated goals for the year. You may
recall they were to:
The
state of our club is very good and I think we've accomplished these goals
pretty well. We, and our city, have enjoyed numerous visiting boaters in spite
of our (past) dock security issues. We have a robust membership level and our
volunteers did a fabulous job of chairing committees and creating excellent
events, cruises, projects and even cleanup days. We got a lot of pleasure out
of our River, Bay and Delta and some even enjoyed the high seas. Last but not
least, we are financially viable and looking forward to investing in our club’s
future. I'm proud of our team and I truly value the support we got from all of
you, our committee chairs and volunteers.
Our
tasks were both fun and challenging at times and we rose to the occasion. On
the other hand we've taken on some issues that turned out to be lightning rods
for generating strong positions on the part of our board and our general
membership. Through these lively times we did our best to stay on task and be
true to our mission and goals for the year.
Although we are all simply volunteers working for the good of the club,
we ran a very successful business this year and everyone should feel good about
that. The bottom line is we still have fun, we make new friends and we continue
to learn and improve. To me, these are the reasons for joining a club.
Safe
boating, fun and camaraderie being our mission, we sure had some fun cruises
this year including the last one to San Rafael. And to my knowledge, all were
safe (with the possible exception of the bar at San Rafael…Marcie packs a
wallop in those drinks). To the last, whether on our boats, in our dinghies or
at the various YCs…there is never a shortage of camaraderie.
We
capped off a great year of events with a successful "HAPPENIN 50s
BASH". Wow, does Ted have a memory for those fine old 50s tunes! Next is our annual Installation Dinner
planned and implemented by Don and Gloria Roberts and music by James Keller. I
look forward to seeing you there on November 3rd.
On
a more somber note, several of our club members have had or are having health
problems this year. The most recent of whom is Sally Rankin. To brighten their
days we’ve done our best to offer them some Sunshine. To me this is one of the
ways we show what we’re made of. It is also another reason to be proud of our
club. All of our members contribute to our club in one way or another and
thereby enrich our experience. For instance, some remember that Dick Rankin
turned the first shovel of dirt to construct the clubhouse that we all enjoy.
Dick and Sally were active members for many years.
As
a result of Sally’s failing health she can no longer enjoy the benefits of our
club and has offered her proprietary membership for sale. If you are interested
in purchasing her membership please contact Gloria Roberts, your Membership
Chairperson.
Finally,
I’m proud to have served as your commodore for this fiscal year and hope that
in the final assessment I’ve lived up to your expectations.
Fair
winds, following seas, happy and safe boating for the new year,
Tom
